How Casewire uses your information

Casewire at rss.cascient.com, including the Casewire iPhone app, is run by Campbell Herbert ("me", "I"). This policy explains what information it holds about you, why, who else sees it and what you can do about it.

Casewire republishes RSS feeds of court and tribunal judgments, and lets you follow, search and summarise them. It doesn't show adverts or use your information for marketing, and it has no analytics or tracking (I built it for myself because Outlook's RSS feeds no longer work, so I don't much care for that sort of thing.)

What it holds about you

Your account

• Your email address, which is also your sign-in name. It's stored encrypted.
• Your password, stored only as a one-way hash. I can't see it (but you still shouldn't use a password you use elsewhere).
• Your account's status and permissions, when you registered, and when you last signed in.
• Sign-in sessions for each browser and phone you use, so you stay signed in (for up to 30 days), and the personal feed links that you can use in other RSS readers.

How you use Casewire

• Which items you've read or marked unread, so this matches across your devices.
• Feeds you've hidden, the custom feeds you've made and their search terms.
• Your notification choices (digests and alerts, their times and feeds) and the time and timezone you set for those notifications to be sent, and when each digest was last sent.
• The AI summaries you ask for, with a record of when and whether it worked.

Technical information

• Your IP address, briefly and in memory only, to limit repeated sign-in attempts and other abuse.
• The server's logs, which record requests and events such as sign-ins, changes made by administrators and summaries (by account ID, not email address). They're kept for troubleshooting.

Casewire doesn't collect your name, location, contacts or anything else from your devices.

Why it uses it

I use your information to provide Casewire to you: to sign you in, keep your account secure, remember your reading and settings, and send you the emails you choose. Where UK or EU data protection law applies, my legal basis is that this is necessary to provide the service you've signed up for, and, for security logs, my legitimate interest in keeping Casewire secure.

Cookies and storage

The website uses two cookies, both strictly necessary: one keeps you signed in and one protects forms against cross-site request forgery. There are no analytics or advertising cookies, and no third-party content. If you use Casewire without signing in, your browser remembers what you've read (in its local storage), and it stays on that device.

The iPhone app

The app talks only to the Casewire server. It keeps your sign-in session in the iOS Keychain and remembers the server address, what you've read and unsent read/unread changes on your phone. It contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and it doesn't use your location, contacts, photos or other data on your phone.

Who else sees it

I don't sell your information or share it with anyone for their own purposes. These services handle some of it for me, but only to run Casewire:

• Hosting: DigitalOcean, London (UK) runs the server that stores everything described here.
• Email: Resend delivers the emails (password resets, digests and alerts), so it handles your email address and the content of those emails.
• AI summaries: when a summary is made, the judgment's text and its title, court and citation are sent to Anthropic (Claude). Casewire doesn't send your name, email address or other details about you. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic doesn't use this to train its models.

I can see the list of users (email addresses, status and permissions) to manage access. I may also disclose information if the law requires it.

To fetch judgments, Casewire downloads them from the courts' own websites (or whatever other source the relevant court has designated to hold those judgments, e.g., in the UK it's the National Archives). It doesn't send those websites anything about you.

How long it keeps it

• Your account and settings: until your account is deleted.
• Sign-in sessions: until you sign out or they expire. Password reset links work for 60 minutes.
• Read and unread: the most recent 20,000 changes per account.
• Server logs: as long as needed for troubleshooting and security, then deleted.

When an account is deleted, its sessions, read status, hidden and custom feeds and notification settings are deleted with it. Summaries you asked for stay available to other users; the record of who asked keeps only an account number that no longer matches anyone.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your information, to correct it, to delete your account and information, or to restrict or object to how I use it (Casewire already takes only the minimum required information to make the service work. So, if you do object, it just won't work for you). You can change your password and notifications, sign out of other devices and delete your account yourself, on your account page on the website or under Account in the iPhone app. For anything else, email privacy@cascient.com. I'll reply within one month.

If you're in the UK and unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. Elsewhere, you can contact your local data protection authority.

Security

Casewire is served only over HTTPS. Email addresses are encrypted and passwords hashed in the database, sessions and feed links can be revoked, and sign-in attempts are rate-limited.

Children

Casewire is a professional tool, and it's not intended for under 18s - some of the material accessible via Casewire isn't all that appropriate for children (judgments in criminal cases concerning sexual assault, for example).

Changes

If I change this policy, I'll update it here and change the date at the top. For significant changes, I'll let account holders know by email.
